Cybersecurity setup, response and remediation
Small businesses are attacked for the same reasons large ones are: mailboxes, remote access and unpatched software. We put the basic controls in place, and we help you respond if something gets through.
Setup
A practical setup is a set of controls matched to the systems you already run. Depending on what you already have, that work includes:
- Firewalls, to filter traffic and block what should never reach the office network
- Intrusion detection and prevention, to notice hostile traffic and stop it
- Antivirus and anti-malware, to find and quarantine infected files
- Encryption, so intercepted data is not readable
- User access controls, so staff reach only the systems their job needs
Response
If you suspect a break-in, the order of work matters more than the tool.
- Identify what happened and how far it reached
- Contain it — isolate a machine or a segment of the network before more data leaves
- Remove the malware, close the account, or reset the credentials that were abused
- Recover: restore what you can, repair what you must, and tell the customers or partners who are actually affected
Remediation
Response stops the bleeding. Remediation is why the same thing should not happen next month.
- Install the vendor patches that close the hole
- Harden the system: turn off services you do not use, set stronger passwords, tighten access
- Keep the software current after the emergency is over
- Walk staff through the specific trick that was used, so the next email is less likely to work
What you are buying
Protection for the files, mail and systems the business cannot operate without. Less downtime when something does go wrong. A straight answer when a customer asks how their data is looked after. Where your industry expects these controls, this is the work of putting them in place.
